Hanna, Fleas, School

Hello Nice People,

We are supposed to get some of Hurricane Hanna tomorrow but it is already raining tonite.  It is coming down in sheets that I can hardly see thru.  Maybe it will let up in the morning for awhile so that we can get some of the outside "stuff" battened down.  Like the patio umbrella, chairs, trash cans, flower pots. bed frame.  Wait, bed frame?  Yup there's a bed frame in the back yard and if it blows over, it will hit the Blessed Mother Cage..............don't ask!
FLEAS............We are having a terrible time with fleas this summer.  Poor little Gloriebelle is really suffering.  Now I have told you before that Gloriebelle has NO hair.

She is one sad looking little doggie.
So I keep shirts on her most of the time so  she does not dig herself raw....which she does anyway.  If she has one flea,  she gets hot to the touch and digs til she is red and sore.  She runs out back to pee pee and runs back in and they still find her.  So every time she  goes out,  and comes back in,  hubby searches for that one hitchhiker.  We do flea spray sparingly because its not good to put it on bare skin.  Then the A&D ointment on any spots she has dug sore before we got to her.
Daddys little girl............................................

School has started.  We just finished our first week.  I am a little disappointed in my run.  It is just too darn long.  My morning run is 3 and one half hours.   And the afternon run is 3 and one half hours. My first pick up is at 6:45, and we get in at 9:30.  There was a day when I would be thrilled to have that many hours,  but I am getting too old for this.   The kids are spread out so far that I am covering 110 miles morning and 100 miles afternoon .  Hey,  I had a run 10 years ago that was 340 miles total per day.  And that one was a killer.  I just cannot handle that anymore.   While I am driving, my back hurts, and my knee hurts because I cannot stretch my left leg.  The kids are good so who am I to complain.  I shouldn't say I cannot handle it.  It's just not as enjoyable as it used to be.

OMG  look what time it is.  I am Outta Here.

  1. Poor little pooch!  That would be awful.    Wow, that bus run would be about 90 miles too long for me. I don't know how you do it!  I hope the kids behave themselves. Linda in Washington state

  2. Oh poor little thing, she is so adorable. Here is a safe thing you can use.  I presume that tea tree oil is available over there?  You can dab that on with cotton wool, fleas absolutely hate it.  As she has no hair you can dilute a couple of drops in a small amount of water and dab that on instead.

Sounds as if the job is getting too much.  Do not overdo things.

I will not ask about the bed frame in the garden.

  3. P.S. You need a good quality tea tree oil, not the type that is sold for burning with a candle under but the type that is safe to put on wounds, spots etc.

  4. Poor little Gloriebelle. I feed my doggies brewer's yeast to keep the fleas off them. They are ninety percent outside dogs and it seems to work. Once in awhile I find one on one of them after they have played with my daughter's bunch of dogs.   I just can't imagine driving that many miles every day, Marlene. I hate driving to the grocery that's twenty miles away. Enjoy your day off and I surely hope the storm doesn't do much damage. I haven't turned on the tv yet to see :).........alice

  5. I would think the fleas would leave a hairless baby alone.  Poor thing.  Marlene my friend, it may be time to think about retiring.  I know you are fighting that idea, but trust me, you won't regret it.  Time to enjoy those Golden Years.
    Hugs, Joyce

  7. Hi Marlene, thanks for visiting and commenting in my journal. I hope you didn't have any storm damage. Poor little Gloriebelle. Fleas have been a terrible problem here this year also. Fleas are attracted to white. Maybe you could put on a darker color shirt for her to go outside. Our dogs come and go through a doggie door so they have been getting a lot of them. Even meds from the vet has not done a very good a job with them. A lady told me the other day she and everyone in her neighborhood uses the T Gel human shampoo on their dogs and they don't have a problem. I did buy some but haven't used it yet. Our Patches has allergies on her skin also plus she is white. A problem for sure. Helen

  8. Oh poor little Gloriebelle, bless her heart.  My Buddy is the same way if he gets one flea bite he rips himself to ribbons.  I am using garlic tablets and it has been working wonders. Warning...a bad side effect is gas and it is room clearing!!!  This year he has not had one flea.  I don't like to use Frontline or any of the sprays on him since he is so sensitive.  I did find an all natural spray that didn't irritate him & worked.  Good luck with her, I hope she gets some relief.

  9. It's been a long while since I stopped by.  Loved reading all about your goings on.  Sounds like retirement is just around the corner.   Good luck with the new school year.  Hope the kids behave themselves.

  10. The fleas have been horrendous here as well!! The worst ever for us. My poor dog has scratched himself bald. The good flea stuff is so darn expensive so we do what we can. ..hugs, Christine

  11. Even though Gloriebelle has no hair, she should be able to use Frontline. Try getting that. You can get it a lot cheaper through Petshed.com. Its an Australian based site. My FILs wife told me about it and I am going to use it to get Tips flea control. As for out in the yard, get you one of those cheapy sprayers for ten bucks at Walmart or a hardware store and get you some concentrated Prymethrin, dilute it in water, I think its two tablespoons per gallon, and spray the yard. Or you could use granules that treat the yard for all kinds of bug pests. You are a brave woman to drive a school bus, and I am glad to hear the kids are good for you. That is a lot of driving every day. Hugs, Kelly
