Hello Nice People, That's Bishop Fulton J. Sheen. He's been dead since 1979. And that's too bad because we sure could use him today. Back in the dinosaur age, that would be the 1950's we were required to watch his half hour program every Tuesday Night. Every Wednesday morning, one of the first things Sister said was, "Who did not watch Bishop Fulton Sheen on television last night?" And there was little Mary Roche in the back with her little hand in the air. If my memory serves me well, in the early fifties, we didn't even HAVE a TV.But that was no excuse. "Mary Roche, why didn't you go to a neighbors and watch?" "Sorry Sister, I will be sure to do that next week." "Mary", that was my name in school. At home I was Marlene. Today, I have dropped the Mary, much to my daddy's chagrin. He so wanted me named after the Blessed Mother.
When I did watch Bishop Fulton Sheen, I think most things he talked about went over my head and every other Catholic school kid sitting on the floor and squirming in boredom. One on the things I remember from those long ago years, was his sense of humor. He would always tell some funny stories that the adults in his audience loved. And I remeber his eyes. I always found them to be kind of scary.
But here I am, many, many years later. And through the power of the internet, Fulton Sheen is again available to watch. Now, I See him in a different light. What a treasure he was!! Yes, he does have a great sense of humor. And when he tells a joke, those eyes that I once thought were scary, now beam with delight. He has a great delivery and he is so proud of himself when a joke comes off good.
But his messages are what is so poignant. If only more people could hear him today. If ony we could sit these kids down and say listen to what this man is saying. Listen to what is wrong with this world. Bishop Sheen, I'm sorry it took so long.

  1. I was a teen in the 50's but I wasn't Catholic. I was sitting in the pew at the Methodist church listening to a boring sermon from Brother Rader. I thought that preacher would never get transfered to another church. I bet what he was saying was what teens now days need to hear too.
